This house was the home of Lucius Amerson, who made U.S. history when he was elected sheriff of Macon County in 1966. Amerson became the first Black sheriff in the country since Reconstruction.
Amerson won the election although the Tuskegee Civic Association (TCA) officially endorsed a different candidate. Student activists, who viewed the TCA’s methods as outdated, accommodationist, and too slow, threw their support behind Amerson and aided his campaign by registering new voters and spreading his messages in the rural parts of the county where they focused their voter registration work.
Amerson served four terms as sheriff from 1967 - 1987.
CBS news clips from 1966 show Lucius Amerson discussing what he will do once he is sworn in as sheriff and different reactions from Macon County residents about his recent election.
